Laberge

I haven't posted much new stuff lately cos I was studying for an exam, which I completed last Saturday.  Other than that, I haven't really heard much music that's knocking my socks off so I've kind of been listening to the same stuff over and over.  I just don't want to listen to any kind of cheesy shit anymore and I'm clamoring for some real hip hop.  Can't wait to see Doom in all his lip synching glory this summer at Pitchfork.  And I'm kind of thinking of raiding my old CD library and pulling up some 90s house classics that I forgot about.  But until then I have one fantastic song for you, Vancouver's own Laberge with "Neon Disco".  This gives me hope.

I just heard the new Alan Braxe

Ever since I heard Alan Braxe's remix of Benjamin Diamond's "In Your Arms"
.
...I knew Mssr. Quême had some serious game.
.
.
And now after seeing him DJ two times and hearing his new remix of Fenech-Soler's "The Cult of Romance"discodust_got_the_goods I'm willing to go out on a limb and say he might be the most talented French producer not named Guy or Tom.
.
.
I just really like him.
.
So anyways, check this out - it's a remix of J-Kwon's Tipsy by Party Time 2000.  I can't stop listenin' to it!!

Arajay: The Saga Continues

I'm on some pretty thin ice here.
.
Here I am, just a week after receiving a rebuke from the DMCA, once again posting illegal copyrighted material.
.
What am I doing?
.
I don't have express written consent of Damp Heat to post this. I don't even have oral. Dude's gonna get his lawyers to put a cap in my a**!
.
[Editor's Note: anti DMCA rant edited for space]
.
.
Here's a remix that hopefully won't get taken down by the Gestapo, by Arajay. It is simply catchy as all hell, and you probably won't be able to get it out of your head for weeks. There should be a warning label!
.
Arajay, pictured above, is an emerging talent coming out of the damp New Orleans heat with beats that do not politely ask you to boogie, they demand it. Sorry ladies, he's taken. As with many successful music producers, Arajay is also a graphic designer by day and has a large portfolio that you can examine @ arajay dot com, as well as many other goodies to check out.
.
Honestly I didn't know what to think about this song the first time I heard it, kind of like a confused white boy on the dance floor when the music starts. Then my head started a'bobbin', I start singing the chorus ("Shreveport's crappy, Shreveport's crappy"), and now I have anointed it as the dirty party jam for which I've been clamoring. Now that's what I call a filthy bass line.
.

Party Time 2000

I don't know who this guy is.
Party Time 2000 is a Chicago-based producer hailing from my former Northside neighborhood of Rogers Park.
.
Pratt & Sheridan, Kenmore and Granville, and Howard Street and Damen, where I grew up, yea boy! Keep your head down, don't make eye contact, and respect the blue cameras up in that piece.
.
How does this end up in my mail box? It's really good!
.
As this is a small blog and I don't even imagine many people read it, I am always surprised and pleased to get mail. So I get like one reader submission a week, which isn't much, but the crazy thing is that half of them are ridiculously amazing. I always open them thinking it's going to be crap, but whoa is me, it hardly ever is. Case in point, Leonardus EP from last week. Shoot, I'm going to put Womanizer on right now, that sucker is so good and crisp it blows my mind every time I listen to it.
.
Which leads right up to my point. I only received one submission this week, and tada, it is freakin unreal. I don't know what I did to deserve these jams, but sure enough they are amazing. At first, I looks at the track list and I'm like hmmm, I bet I know how this is gonna sound and it's probably gonna be like every other blog jam out there, but how pleased I was to discover a finely woven tapestry of sparkling pretty party jams. Right off the bat, the mix starts up with an on point mix of Devin The Dude with just a gorgeous analog squiggle in the background over Devin's rhymes. I love how it's not super duper up tempo and is not forcefully demanding me to get up and shimmy, the sound encourages me to shimmy yet does not mandate the shimmy. And the Lil' Wayne remix? Freakin' gorgeous. best Lil' Wayne remix I have heard in my entire life. I cannot believe how delicate and heartfelt it is, just a spine tingler and prettier than physics should allow Lil' Wayne's voice to be sampled. Then the remix of Drowning Pool and Peg Roussel? I don't even know who or what that is but I know I want more.
.
So in closing, Party Time 2000, your systems are clearly much more advanced than mine and I only hope that you continue to share your technology with the rest of us.
.
First Rainbo Video and now this....

If you are from another town, please bring a bucket of water because once again Chi is on fire!

Leonardus

I have nothing to say about this but "Wowsers". This is some of the most fantastic filtered house music I have heard thus far in 2009. Leonardus, I kneel in your presence as you are clearly on the next level and my only wish is that you continue to send me every song, jingle, mix, track, beat, rap, rhyme, or noise that you produce going forward. If you preside over a hootenanny and do the patter call, please send me the audio extract of that as well.
.
By the way, when I start making tracks again, it's going to be under "Hootenanny" so nobody use that name please! Thanks!

I present to you Leonardus "The Womanizer EP"

Bag Raiding

I finally got to see Rainbo Video play last night. It was the revolution. What a manic performance and just so much fun! It was presented at gabba speed with a bmore beat, and it made my head spin and I couldn't stop smiling for an hour after I got home. The video projections were outstanding and sometimes hilarious. The mixing was some of the finest I ever heard - loops seamlessly woven together, all of a sudden, Seal's voice gets chopped up and looped over a beat, just crazy stuff like that. It pretty much confirmed what I already knew...Rainbo Video is going to be a force in the Chicago music scene and he's one of the most talented new producers out there. My highest accolades.
.
.
So this song here is called Smoking, it's by Bag Raiders, and it's the best Bag Raiders song in existence. I heard everybody gettin' all hot and bothered by Shooting Stars but the Cheech sample kills it and I could listen to this chipper beat all day long! You know, that stuff that's tied to a stick!

Mix It Friendly

This is a new, probably young, producer coming out of France called Mix It Friendly. On the label Galaxie_Comete, his re-eaten by MIF mix of Funky Salad reminds those that house music is indeed a feeling, a feeling that not everybody is gonna understand!
.
.
Great job on the track, Mix it Friendly! I'll be looking out for you.

Coffee Talk with Rainbo Video

What's that kind of music where the producer is required by law to include at least one Lil John sample, be it as it may "Yeahhh-uh" or "Whatttt"?
.
Bmore?
.
.
Oh yeah it's bmore, and Chicago's own Rainbo Video is perhaps the best in the world at it. Continuing with my typical lack of reticence and affinity for the superlative, I hearby proclaim Rainbo Video the Lebron James of the club track. All hail to the king!
.
Well call it what you will, but this guy's got jams like you never heard before. I'm fascinated by the frenetic sonic tapestry woven together in his 5 song debut, which can be downloaded for free at Video Pop blog here. Introduced to me by a post on The Fast Life blog titled "Rainbo Video, Please Marry My Momma", I also became speechless after the first listen. There's nothing to compare these songs to in the universe! Buku extra credits for the sound innovation, extra style points for the Duncan Sheik, and he even details his process for creating them! My favorite is Xenoglossy 17, straight shivers bro.
.
Here is our conversation, and make sure to download his 2007 vintage live set, Dulcet Wreckage! 2007 will go down as one of the best years ever in electronic music by the way...
.
.
  • Lindsaylovesme: Who do you hang out with in the Chicago music scene? And who here would you like to work with?

  • Rainbo Video: I don't really hang out with anyone from the Chicago music scene on a regular basis, but I know some good DJs and producers who I try to catch play out: DJ C, Yea Big + Kid Static, the whole Noise Floor crew, Willy Joy, Capcom, Vyle. Also, my friend Mike is in a good folk rock band called Horse in the Sea. In terms of collaboration, Aleks and the Drummer and I have talked about working together before, which would be great. I think working with a pop band would be a lot of fun - The Changes, Office, Blah Blah Blah. You can definitely expect remix collaborations between Party Time 2000 and I, as well as live shows together. We're both really into electronic pop.

  • Lindsaylovesme: Did you grow up in Chicago or somewhere else? How do you think where you came from has influenced your music? Which neighborhood do you live in currently?

  • Rainbo Video: I was born in Chicago, but lived primarily in the southwest suburbs growing up. I think location has actually had very little impact on the music I'm interested in. I honed my taste mainly through the internet and exchanging music with friends, which in turn influenced the music I make. I was not a part of any Chicago scenes, be it post-rock and math rock or rave and house. I got interested in those genres not by going to shows and clubs, but just listening to lots of music. I'm living in Lincoln Park these days.

  • Lindsaylovesme: If somebody wasn't able to hear any sounds, what would you tell them your music is like?

  • Rainbo Video: I could give them some points of reference in terms of genre, but ideally I'd avoid that and just give them sensory experiences. And that's not just a quirky answer to avoid labels, I'm actually interested in the cognitive ways we perceive media. I might show them one of my films that's really bright and colorful and have them eat some cherry candy. I think my music is the aural conflation of those things. The whole bright neon color thing has become somewhat ubiquitous and overexposed in indie dance culture in the past couple of years, which I think is unfortunate because most people use it as this generic retro 80s signifier. But I've always been interested in it as a kind of pleasurable but violent sensory input - a way to induce a euphoric feeling when it's slightly restrained, and a headache when it's really assaulting.

  • Lindsaylovesme: On a scale of 1 - 10, how stupid and mundane would you say these questions are so far (1 being the least stupid and 10 being the most)?

  • Rainbo Video: 1 - The questions are gold.

  • Lindsaylovesme: On a scale of 3 - 6 (6 being the most), how annoyed were you when I bailed out of meeting you for lunch this week in the Chase building, keeping in mind that it was extremely cold and we both could have gotten frostbite?

  • Rainbo Video: 3 - Not annoyed at all! Chicago is a barren tundra.

  • Lindsaylovesme: And on a scale of 4 to 100 (100 being the hardest), how hard do you think you'll rock it as opener for Futurecop! at the Empty Bottle on March 3rd (perhaps my favorite venue)?

  • Rainbo Video: 99 - I don't want to injure anyone.

  • Lindsaylovesme: I was intrigued by a line you wrote in your Video Pop blog in the 9-14-08 post, "The Sound of Rainbo Video" - "...in case you forgot my stance on music, none of these samples were used ironically. I really do love Duncan Sheik." Please, tell me more about your stance on music!

  • Rainbo Video: For me, genres and their cultural associations are largely irrelevant. I made the Duncan Sheik comment because he's a good example of Top 40 Adult Contemporary Pop, which in the world of music criticism either has a stigma attached to it because it's perceived as commercial and vapid, and therefore can only be appreciated ironically or as a guilty pleasure, or it has a vaguely positive association because it's used as a way to establish some kind of universal cred ("I legitimately love this heartfelt mainstream track as well as obscure avant-garde music and therefore am ultimately sophisticated.") Ideally, people don't read my use of it as any of those things, and just think, "Wow, that was a really catchy melody and an interesting new way of repurposing it."

If I sample something, it's because I like how it sounds. I'm not trying to make some critical statement about its cultural context. In other words, I really only care about the sounds, and whether they're in some way pleasant. I certainly gravitate toward some genres more than others, but that's because statistically, the majority of the songs in those specific genres are sonically pleasing to me. Genres aggregate songs that follow similar musical and sonic conventions, so if you find those conventions aurally pleasing, it's likely you'll appreciate the genre as a whole. The opposite is true as well.

I'll like almost any song that has really catchy, melodic hooks and harmonies, regardless of genre. Video Pop is based entirely on that idea - "pop" as a sound, not a genre. Interesting rhythmic elements are good too, but inessential for me - I listen to a lot of ambient. Most of the music I listen to is instrumental, so lyrics are of little importance. If they're clever or interesting, like, say, Stephin Merritt's or Gastr del Sol's, then they're the icing on the cake, but honestly bad lyrics don't bother me if the music is amazing.

Ultimately, what all of this means in terms of my own music is that I won't be staying within the limits of any one style or genre. I don't think I could even if I tried. Coming from a background in experimental film, I don't see music as this really personal way of expressing myself, I see it as a broad method of creating a perceptual experience. I sculpt sound and try to induce a specific response in the listener, and there are many ways to accomplish that.

Right now people think of me as another electro pop/dance producer, but that's just because the tracks I've released can be broadly grouped into those categories. It's kind of happenstance that dance music is what I've released. And actually, I think people call me "electro pop" just based on the fact that that term is in vogue right now. It doesn't bother me at all, but if I had made this music at an earlier time, I'm positive people would call it something completely different. They'd call it electroclash, or IDM/glitch, or big beat, or hardcore rave, or computer music/plunderphonics. Which is great! After all, labels enable people to talk to each other about music, which is a good thing. Outside of communicating about it, though, I think we should try to divorce music itself from any labels or cultural associations and just appreciate the sounds.

Belgian Beer Interview

Avignon, France

Bonjour!
.
Today I have some treats!
.
François, the teenage mastermind behind the deep house sensation Belgian Beer, is here to talk about house music, Chicago, and Roland 909s. The good stuff. This young house music prodigy has demonstrated an uncanny ability to immerse the listener in an authentic, nostalgic take on 90s Chicago and filtered French house sounds. With mixing dexterity to spare, Belgian Beer will take you on a journey through his favorite deep filtered disco house tracks spanning two decades. To me, his sound reminds me of some of my most pleasurable times in life - listening to one of my favorite JDub mixtapes while hanging out at my old Elston Avenue crash pad, or watching Paul Johnson extend the mix another minute in a dirty south side warehouse. His music will make you feel as warm and snug as putting on your favorite sweatshirt right out of the dryer.
.
Here is our Q&A...
.
  • Lindsaylovesme: What is it about house music that makes it, in my opinion at least, special and different from other styles of music? When did you start listening to it? Are you a student or all grown up?

  • Belgian Beer: I'm a student and I'm only 16 years old. I started listening to house music when I was about 7 years old. With Daft Punk and other house producers finding success on the radio and on TV, and tracks like The Bucketheads "The Bomb"becoming hits, I was already becoming interested in house music. It is absolutely my favorite style, it's fresh, it's chic and I love the groove of drumboxes. House music is essential to be in style!

  • Lindsaylovesme: Word. Is the name Belgian Beer a tribute to your favorite beverage or is it about something different? What are some brands of Belgian beer we should look out for at the liquor store?

  • Belgian Beer: I was born in Belgium, now I live in the south of France and the name is just a tribute to my homeland. It's the atmosphere that I love from there, I love Belgium. Try Leffe or Kriek, which is a classic Belgian beer, and also try Chimay.

  • Lindsaylovesme: I will do just that! What are your favorite Chicago house tracks from the 90s?

  • Belgian Beer: I love tracks by Paul Johnson and DJ Sneak, and lots of other classics. It's an influence for me. The city of my dreams!

  • Lindsaylovesme: What kinds of instruments or software do you use to make your tracks?

  • Belgian Beer: I only use Reason and some other software at the moment. In the future, I would like to buy old machines, like the Roland series.

  • Lindsaylovesme: Aside from music and beer, what is another fun way you spend your time?

  • Belgian Beer: Well, studying, community and social networking websites, friends, video games...but I really spend a lot of time listening to music, what would the world would be like without music?

.

I don't even want to know! Thanks so much to Belgian Beer, who already has more skills than half the Daft Crew at the ripe age of 16. Belgian Beer, you are an amazing talent and I expect big things! All the best.
.

Here are two original songs by the teenage resident of Avignon, France. They will only be available for 30 days so please download them right away! Thanks again to Belgian Beer.

Yo i Yo

This track made Sir John's Best of 2008 post on his Le Touch blog which I like very much, and since Sir John is the man, I downloaded it immediately. What a jam this is! I am totally addicted and I could play this over and over all day. I told him I loved the track and asked for more, and he hooked a big post from back in July all about Yo i Yo that made my day. It's kind of like the Mexican Phoenix...or an indie Plastilina Mosh or something, just so simple and concise!! Big ups to all ya'll. Somebody, please remix this!!
